“Olshansky Method”

The Olshansky Method, developed by Yury Olshansky, is a comprehensive approach to acting, directing, and scriptwriting. This innovative technique focuses on a detailed analysis of scenes, likened to a musical score for musicians. The core concept involves creating an “acting score,” a detailed breakdown that outlines each action and reaction within a scene using precise active verbs (e.g., to reject, to surrender, to avoid). This method encourages actors to focus on executing actions rather than getting preoccupied with emotions, which are expected to arise naturally from these actions.

Key Components of the Olshansky Method

  1. Acting Score:
    • Detailed scene analysis is developed in collaboration with the director.
    • This score identifies and clearly outlines actions and reactions for actors, described using active verbs.
    • Helps actors deliver consistent performances irrespective of the shooting sequence.
  1. Principles of Action and Motivation:
    • Movement: Every movement has an underlying action.
    • Action: Each action stems from a need.
    • Need: Behind every need, there is a motivation.
    • Motivation: Motivations are driven by sequences of events.
    • This flow from motivation and needs propels the narrative forward.
  1. Text and Body Language:
    • The script’s text supports the actions; the essence lies beyond words.
    • Emphasis on body language and character intentions to convey depth.
    • Actors can express the essence of their roles even without speaking.

Benefits and Implementation

  • Consistency and Continuity: By focusing on actions rather than emotions, actors can maintain continuity and authenticity in their performances, regardless of the shooting order.
  • Depth of Performance: Prioritizing body language and intentions allows actors to deliver more profound and nuanced performances.
  • Versatility: Applicable in various acting scenarios, including silent performances.

Demonstrated Effectiveness

The effectiveness of the Olshansky Method was notably showcased by Giusi Merli, a pupil of Olshansky, in her role as “Santa” in the Oscar-winning film “The Great Beauty.” Her mostly silent portrayal exemplified the method’s emphasis on actions and intentions over dialogue, proving its impact on delivering compelling performances.

Conclusion

The Olshansky Method represents a significant shift from traditional acting techniques, placing a stronger emphasis on the underlying actions, needs, and motivations driving a character. By doing so, it enables actors to deliver consistent, authentic, and deeply nuanced performances.

What Giusi Merli says about the Olshansky Method

“During my long acting career I attended many workshops and worked with many directors, always trying to pin down the essentials of the profession, so necessary for original interpretation. However, I only acquired partial knowledge, which often was confusing and contradictory. When I finally took the Olshansky Method Workshop I found what I was looking for. It clarified and structured my previous experience, and not only gave me new tools to execute the best of my acting talent, but developed my writing ability and self directing capability. It opened up new possibilities and inspired my individual independent work.”
