What zoforos is

Zoforos is a long relief (160 meters), spread all along the perimeter of the Parthenon. Ιt represents one single event in the life of ancient Athenians: the ceremonial celebration called Panathinea. Zoforos contains many representations in a raw, one following the other. In the Greek language, the word “zoforos” means “it carries life” (as an image).

Through a different point of view, one could say that zoforos’ length and its successive images bring in mind the cinematic film. Ιn order to see the entire zoforos, the viewer must “travel” by walking all along its length. Thus, the viewing of zoforos resembles to the viewing of a cinematic travelling. Similar to cinema, the spectator acquires a visual experience that is also an in-time-experience. An experience with development, evolution, climax.

But one could also say the opposite as well: that a cinematic film resembles to a zoforos since it also “carries life”, which is described through its successive images and is presented to the eyes and soul of the spectator.
